Circadian Biology: Clocks within Clocks
A small cluster of approximately 20,000 neurons in the ventral hypothalamus provide the body with key time-keeping signals and drive circadian rhythms. This circadian clock exhibits surprisingly complex substructures, with inputs from the retina, and outputs to other brain structures. Rather little is known of the neurotransmitters involved, or their regulation.
متن کاملCircadian biology: Clocks for the real world
The circadian system of Neurospora crassa includes a molecular feedback loop that is entrainable by light. A recent study has shown that a second, elusive oscillator interacts with the feedback loop to drive output rhythms.

Systems biology is a natural extension of molecular biology; it can be defined as biology after identification of key gene(s). Systems-biological research is a multistage process beginning with (a) the comprehensive identification and (b) quantitative analysis of individual system components and their networked interactions, which lead to the ability to (c) control existing systems toward the d...
متن کاملCircadian Biology: Fibroblast Clocks Keep Ticking
Real-time cellular imaging of gene expression has revealed that fibroblasts contain a robust, self-sustained and cell-autonomous circadian oscillator, with a range of properties that both overlap and contrast with those of the neural clock of the suprachiasmatic nuclei.
متن کاملCircadian clocks
The biological world is not static: organisms inhabit environments which change predictably over the course of the day and night. There will therefore be selective advantage to any individuals able to anticipate these changes and attune their physiology and behaviour accordingly. Anticipation of daily cycles is conferred by endogenous timers, biological clocks with an intrinsic period of approx...
